APART FROM THE SECURITY GUARD, WHO DILIGENTLY JOTTED DOWN OUR CAR DETAILS AND LICENSE PLATE NUMBER AND HAUGHTILY LAUGHED AT US “JÓVENES” FOR ASKING IF THE WINE TOUR WAS FREE, WE HAD A GREAT TIME AT VIÑA CASAS DEL BOSQUE.
CASABLANCA VALLEY — The winery is situated between Santiago and Valparaíso/Viña del Mar. It’s about 70 km west of Santiago and 30 km southeast of Valparaíso. It takes approximately an hour and fifteen minutes to drive or take a bus from Santiago, 30 minutes from Valparaíso, and 40 minutes from Viña del Mar, all via route 68.
As noted on their website, “Currently, Casas del Bosque has 232 productive hectares of white vines: Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc; and red wines: Syrah and Pinot Noir. The ultra-premium Carménère and Cabernet Sauvignon red wines come from the Rapel and Maipo valleys. Today, Casas del Bosque is recognized as a vineyard that specializes in Sauvignon Blanc wine in Chile; our Pinot Noir and Syrah are also excellent wines.”
The winery is designed for you to come and spend the day. Lying down and drinking wine is no longer relegated to just your couch at home. Comfortable patio lounge chairs line the edge of the vineyard so you can relax, sip your wine, and enjoy the beautiful outdoor space. Also, BWI’s are of no consequence here as you are invited to rent a bike and jaunt around the vineyard. There are two paths, one for an easy, short ride, and another longer trail for the more adventurous.
Tours (that aren’t free) are available in varying lengths, and wine tastings are available as well. The restaurant on site, Tanino, is where we enjoyed our wine with a fantastic lunch. You’ll find each item on the menu paired with a recommended wine. Tanino won Tripadvisor’s Certificate of Excellence award for 2014. The food is delicious and reasonably priced.
At Casas del Bosque children are welcome, they’ve even set up a quaint little wooden swing set and play area that’s about a stone’s throw away from the afore-mentioned lounges. You won’t even need to get up from your lounge chair to say “don’t do that” while your kids monkey around on the swingset.
Viña Casas del Bosque was named Chilean Winery of the Year for 2013 at the International Wine and Spirit Competition and was voted The Best Winery to Visit for 2011.
