Chile Honors Gonzalo Rojas in Chillán
Chilean President Sebastián Piñera opened the first stage of a cultural center in honor of poet Gonzalo Rojas while visiting Chillán to celebrate the birth of Bernardo O’Higgins.
CHILLÁN — With the purpose of preserving the work and memory of one of the greatest Chilean poets, President Piñera alongside the first lady Cecilia Morel, the Minister of Defense, Rodrigo Hinzpeter and the Mayor of Chillán, Sergio Zarzar inaugurated this morning the first stage of the Centro Cultural Gonzalo Rojas.
In the context of a new anniversary of the birth of Bernardo O’Higgins, the Head of State started his visit to the area touring the property, acquired by the Government, which will be transformed into a meeting place around the work of the poet. The initiative is also part of the Bicentennial Legacy which promotes the revival of areas and works for the benefit of all Chileans.
During the event, the President claimed that “today is a happy day, we feel that we are doing justice to a great man.” He also added that “ beyond the awards that Rojas received –such as the National Literature Award, Reina Sofia Award, Cervantes Award and Octavio Paz award, he was a man who inspired his contemporaries and nowadays, he continues inspiring those who remain in this world. “
