Children Born Out of Wedlock at Highest Level Ever
In Chile, more children than ever were born outside of wedlock in 2012, a statistic which is steadily on the rise.
PROVIDENCIA — The Civil Registry reported that in 2012, 69.7% of children were born outside of marriage, while 30.2% were born to married couples. The report dates back to the year 2000, in which 48.3% of children were born to unwed parents. The statistic has progressively risen every year.
The report also found that 25,839 babies were born to single mothers and 1,457 were registered under single fathers. Given the strong Catholic traditions in Chilean culture, it is surprising that these statistics are as high as they are.
In Chile, even if parents are unwed, the registered father is obligated to pay child support.
